Obama visit puts Washoe center stage

Reno Gazette Journal
May 10, 2012
By Ray Hagar

. . . “The (voter) registration is very close and this (Washoe County) is where the close elections are won and lost,” said Democratic state Senate candidate Sheila Leslie. “If the president does well here, he is likely to carry the state. If he does poorly here, he definitely won’t win the state.”

Women workers face growing political hostility

Reno News & Review
May 3, 2012
By Dennis Myers
. . . Sheila Leslie, a veteran state legislator, said, “It is perplexing that this inequality continues, given the huge gains women have seen in accessing higher education. There’s no rational reason for women to still be making less than men for the same work. However, there are still some people, like Wisconsin state Sen. Grothman, who believe that ‘money is more important for men’ because women are more oriented to staying home and taking care of the kids. He sponsored the repeal of the equal pay law in Wisconsin … because he believes the pay disparity is a ‘myth of liberal women’s groups,’ despite multiple studies proving the disparity is real. How do we counter this type of nonsense when our policy-makers are willing to deny the facts because they don’t fit a more attractive political narrative? “

Readjusted voter registration numbers in senate District 15 make Leslie feel better

Reno Gazette Journal - Inside Nevada Politics
March 8, 2012
By Ray Hagar

. . . “In any event, the final numbers are essentially the same as they were after redistricting was completed. We are just starting our voter registration efforts in the district and hope to eat into the 2 percent registration advantage. In past races, I've always been able to attract a good number of non-partisans and Republican women so I certainly think there is a solid path to winning this race.”

Stakes high in state Senate race between Leslie, Brower

Reno Gazette Journal
March 4, 2012
By Ray Hagar

At stake is the seat in the state Senate once held by former Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno.

The battle for the Senate majority might hang in the balance, in a legislative district where Republicans hold roughly a 6,000 advantage in voter registration over Democrats.

Although candidates can’t file until Monday, the race for Washoe County’s Senate District 15 already has two well-known politicians: incumbent state Sen. Greg Brower, R-Reno, and former state Sen. Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, who resigned her seat in a safe Democratic district to take on Brower and help her party retain its majority in the Senate.

Washoe County has never seen a Senate race with stakes this high, some political experts said.
